How to Promote Employee Engagement

Research shows that employees that do not have a positive emotional connection to their organizations are less productive and less loyal than fully engaged employees.  This is a strong incentive for leaders to adopt strategies that promote employee engagement. Fostering an environment that promotes employee engagement is particularly difficult, however, when a leader inherits a troubled organization where distrust and bad history exists.

In the following video from Harvard Business Review, Doug Conant, the former CEO of the Campbell Soup Company, identifies four strategies that he used to inspire an employee engagement turnaround during his tenure there.  As you watch the video, listen for Doug’s explanation on how he  accomplished this turnaround by (1) declaring himself, (2) delivering against his strategy, (3) celebrating what went well, and (4) actively engaging with his employees.
