In 100 Words or Less – Leaders Swim Upstream!

by Robert Tanner on June 30, 2011

If you are going to have ideas ahead of the times, you will have to get used to living with the fact that most people are going to believe you are in the wrong! –Bruce Lloyd

I love this quote because it is a powerful reminder that leadership is not easy.   The basic goal of leadership–to inspire others to follow a shared vision for the future–is difficult enough.  It takes real strength to inspire others when many openly doubt where the leader wants to go.  What should this visionary leader do?  Hold to what he knows to be right for the enterprise!  Continue to communicate a desirable future!  Or, said another way, walk in the footsteps of Dr. King, Susan B. Anthony, Mahatma Gandhi, President Lincoln, and others who learned to swim upstream!
