Eight Characteristics of Effective Teams (Part 2)

In my previous post on this issue, I discussed a study by Geoff Bellman and Kathleen Ryan that identifies the eight characteristics of effective teams. I provided the first four performance indicators that great teams share in common.

In this post, I will share the remaining four performance indicators of great teams. They are as follows:

5.  They Embrace Differences!  Great teams value differences of opinion, experience, and approach.  They reject the deception of conformity and instead encourage open discussion around different points of view.  Teams that embrace differences are able to create innovative solutions for organizational issues.

6.  They Apply Unexpected Learning! Great teams evolve beyond their original scope.  Unexpected learning often occurs for many of the team members.  These members apply the lessons they learn to their careers, to their team work, and to their operational activities.

7.  They Strengthen Team Member Relationships! Teams that have common values and a shared vision develop strong relationships.   They learn to trust each other as they work together and obtain results.  These relationships stand the test of time.

8.  They Have Great Results! It makes sense that a team that is able to incorporate the first seven attributes will have great results.  The distinguishing factor of great teams is that they have results that exceed expectations.  Their results can be measured.  Great teams not only have unexpected learning, they also have unexpected results as well!

The result of this study shows that great teams do not occur naturally.  Great teams require team members who have more than their technical skills.  Great teams must have team members who also have people skills, communication skills, and emotional intelligence.  Finally, an organization’s senior leadership must also create an environment where teamwork is rewarded and destructive team behavior is corrected.  Great teams require the sustained engagement of all relevant stakeholders.
