Management Journey Carnival – The Fall Edition

Originally published September 2013.

Welcome to the 2013 Fall Edition of the Management Journey Carnival! For this month’s carnival, I’ve selected articles from Dartmouth’s School of Tuck, Wharton School of Business, Stanford Graduate School of Business, London Business School, UCLA Anderson School of Management, and INSEAD University.

Topics this month include brand leadership, motivation, employee engagement, self development, strategy execution, communication, and innovation. I also share some of my leadership insights on how to turn setbacks into opportunities with an article from my blog. But, as any good host knows, your guests are always first. In this spirit, I want to share with you, my readers, Internet content that’s worth your time to read and reflect upon. I’ll start with my classic post selection.

A Classic Article: Because Good Sense Never Gets Old!

Earlier this year, Kirk Kardashian of Dartmouth’s Tuck School of Business wrote an informative article on brand leadership. Business history is littered with the remains of fallen giants as Kirk explains in his article, For Fallen Brand Leaders, an Uphill Climb. What happened to industry leaders like Yuban, Zenith, and Kodak? Why did they have a Humpty Dumpty fall? As Kirk explains, new research shows that brand leadership is both “hugely beneficial and fragile.”  It’s not easy for leaders to regain market leadership once they’ve lost it! — Brand Leadership

Sometimes the biggest obstacle to your managerial success is the person looking back at you in the mirror! This is the focus of Shirzad Chamine: How to Defeat Your Internal Saboteurs, an article from the Stanford Graduate School of Business. As Shirzad explains, there is an intelligence that is more important than your IQ (mental intelligence) and your EQ (emotional intelligence). It’s your positive intelligence (PQ). As Shirzad explains, listening to your positive internal voices is the key to success. I am sure Norman Vincent Peale would agree! — Self Development, Positive Intelligence

You know where you need to take your department and you have had more than a few thoughtful strategies for getting your team there. Why is it then that you and your team are not making the progress you seek? As Lawrence Hrebiniak of Wharton School of Business explains Got a New Strategy? Don’t Forget the Execution Part. The basic step for a company to follow to become more focused on execution or implementation is to create a culture of execution. Execution requires much more leadership attention than it usually gets. — Strategy Execution

From Management is a Journey: A Strategy for Turning Adversity into Opportunities

Road JourneyThese past several years have been tough for managers at all levels. The sudden uncertainty that came with the 2008 recession, the unrelenting pace of change, and the evolving generational dynamics in the workplace are all contributing factors.

These challenges do not always bring out the best in some organizational leaders either. Adversity has a way of showing what people are truly made of—good and bad. When managers and employees are on the receiving end of questionable organizational practices, how can they turn their painful adversity into new opportunities? I explain how this is possible in my article, Reframing – How to Turn Any Difficult Situation into New Opportunities. — Self Development, Emotional Intelligence, Positive Intelligence

I hope you enjoyed my selections for the Fall Edition of the Management Journey Carnival.
